In 2024, ESAIC advanced its sustainability agenda. The Glasgow Declaration received several new endorsements, including from the Spanish Government. Key initiatives included the publication of the ESAIC Sustainability Consensus Document, an updated Toolkit, and high-impact sessions at Euroanaesthesia 2024. Preparations also began for two new publications on intensive care and nitrous oxide in healthcare.

Endorsement of the Glasgow Declaration
Several National Societies and institutions endorsed the Glasgow Declaration in 2024. Notably, it received official endorsement from the Spanish Government during a formal ceremony chaired by the Spanish Minister of Health, Dr Mónica García. ESAIC was represented by Prof. De Robertis, Ms Weynants, and Dr González-Pizarro.

This document was jointly developed by the NASC and the Guidelines Committee , using a Delphi method to validate recommendations in the context of limited available evidence.
Sustainability Toolkit
The first edition of the Toolkit, developed under the leadership of Prof. Albaladejo, has been updated and published online. This initiative was coordinated by Dr McConnell and Prof. Brazzi, with the support of the full Sustainability Committee and external collaborators from the GAS group (UK/Scotland).

Euroanaesthesia 2024 in Munich
At Euroanaesthesia 2024, the Sustainability Committee organised two well-attended symposia — a Lightning Talk and a Meet-the-Expert session — both filled to capacity, with many delegates standing or seated on the floor, reflecting the high level of interest in sustainability. The Committee also contributed to a Pharmacology Sub-Forum Lightning Talk, which received excellent feedback. Sustainability was featured as one of the three core themes of the Innovation Village, where an open discussion with Industry partner Masimo took place, involving Dr González-Pizarro, Dr Muret, and Dr Sperna Weiland. In addition, Dr González-Pizarro led the Industry Tour and took part in the formal endorsement of the Glasgow Declaration. The Committee further engaged attendees with a “Try Me” quiz and a dedicated poster session led by Dr Sperna Weiland.

Podcast
Dr González-Pizarro and Prof. Edoardo De Robertis recorded a podcast on sustainability in anaesthesia and intensive care, featured as part of the ESAIC Podcast Series aired during Euroanaesthesia 2024. The episode explored key sustainability challenges and opportunities within the speciality, reinforcing ESAIC’s leadership in advancing environmentally responsible clinical practice.
