EU Projects

ESAIC plays an important role in numerous EU-funded projects, partnering with healthcare professionals and leaders to drive innovation and improve patient care in anaesthesiology, intensive care, and perioperative medicine.

In 2024, ESAIC strengthened its contribution to these initiatives by providing expertise in communication, data management, project coordination, survey development, dissemination, and stakeholder engagement, bringing added value to collaborative research efforts across Europe.

EPIC (Started in 2024)

In 2024, the EPIC project officially launched, bringing together experts from intensive care and palliative care across Europe. The year focused on developing key tools, including a trigger list to identify ICU patients needing early palliative care, educational modules, webinars, and telemedicine support. Surveys and interviews were conducted to understand barriers and facilitators for implementation, while a health-economic study began to assess cost-effectiveness. Ethical guidelines for tele-palliative consultations were also drafted. Overall, 2024 laid the groundwork for the full intervention rollout planned for 2025.

SAFEST (Started in 2022)

In 2024, the SAFEST project published its major consensus study, “Moving towards a Core Measures Set for Patient Safety in Perioperative Care: An e‑Delphi Consensus Study”, establishing agreed-upon core patient safety measures for the perioperative pathway. Additionally, the project protocol was formally published in PLOS ONE in June 2024, detailing its mixed-methods implementation design and rollout across 10 hospitals in five European countries to standardise perioperative safety practices. These milestones mark a clear progression from foundational development to readiness for implementation in the near future.

COVend/IXION Trial (Started in 2021)

Investigates the peptide FX06 as a potential treatment for ARDS. In 2024, patient recruitment was extended until 20 December, with all site initiation visits completed and IXION 2.0 launched at ESAIC’s five sites. ESAIC manages all site activities, including eCRF updates, data cleaning, and submission of key amendments to extend trial timelines and secure additional EU funding.
